Description

Spend Easter in the heart of East Gippsland's forests

Friday 30 March – Monday 2 April, 2018

Every Easter, Environment East Gippsland and Victorian National Parks Association hold a camp where you can experience East Gippsland's magnificent forests.

Be guided by expert ecologists revealing the delicate workings of these ancient eco-systems, be awed by the diversity of a pristine rainforest and be outraged by the continuing logging destruction.

  • Tour with expert botanists

  • Talk with forests campaigners

  • Explore rainforests and old growth

  • Search for giant trees

  • Camp with like-minded people

  • Learn more about the huge potential of our forests to store carbon

The 2018 Camp will be strictly limited in numbers, and early booking is recommended.

This is the holiday for forest fanatics!

Our tour leaders and speakers have many years’ experience in the forests of the region and deep knowledge of forest ecology.

A regular well-known personality is botanist - 'Sir' David Cameron. His boundless enthusiasm and knowledge of the plants and history of East Gippsland enthrals his audience; his speciality being rainforests.

Another guide is long-time resident and outspoken conservationist Jill Redwood. She coordinates Environment East Gippsland and is another raconteur of the walks. She will explain the environmental and European history of the region. As these forests have also provided the logging industry with wood for many decades, the results of forest management on the ecology and biodiversity of these areas are also explained

Program Outline

There will be a selection of guided walks and tours, as well opportunities for bird watching and observing forest fauna.

The main activities are on Saturday and Sunday – typically involving a car trip and then a short or longer forest walk.

Activities may vary depending on weather and road conditions on the day.

On Saturday and Sunday evenings there will be talks on the flora and fauna and forest ecology of the region and the conservation challenges. Saturday evening will include an art auction as a fundraiser.

A light meal – soups and dessert – will be on sale with the evening talks.

Camp details

The camp that has been held since 1982, is based in the small farming settlement of Goongerah, about 70 km north of Orbost, nestled between the Snowy and Errinundra National Parks.

Camping is both in the Goongerah camp ground and on the adjoining farm. Water and toilet facilities are provided but there is no electricity or showers. The Goongerah Community Hall will be used for evening talks. It is a pleasant walk of some 10-15 minutes from the camp.

Bring camping gear, friends, food and transport, (maybe fuel as well - the main shops are 70km away in Orbost).

Please - no four-legged friends.
